Staff Accountant I

Five facilities strong, Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region serves the greater Sacramento area with a Level II Trauma Center, comprehensive cancer centers, the world-renowned Sutter Heart Institute, leading mental health services, Case Management, eICU and a Pediatric ICU.Employees of the Sacramento Sierra Region work on behalf of the Sutter Health facilities in the greater Sacramento area.The Staff Accountant assists in maintaining the general ledger of Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital, Sutter Davis Hospital, or any of their Foundations, as assigned, in order to prepare timely and accurate financial statements.Education:  Requires a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance or equivalent combination of education and industry experience.Experience: 1-2 years of progressive experience in general accounting, including general ledger sub-systems in lieu of degree.Knowledge: Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, preferably in a hospital setting. Knowledge of basic accounting concepts, and familiarity with OSHPD chart of accounts a plus.Special Skills/Equipment: Basic to intermediate Excel spreadsheet skills required, and familiarity with general ledger software.   Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. 10-key by touch.Principal Accountabilities:Uses basic accounting knowledge. Prepares simple and recurring journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations as assigned under supervision: Prepares simple and recurring journal entries as directed.Prepares routine general ledger and simple bank account reconciliations.  Initiates review and resolution of reconciling items.Identifies source of problems and recommend corrective action under supervision:Brings errors and accounting issues to attention of supervisor.  Works with supervisor to reconcile and resolve differences. Resolves difference in a timely manner.Arranges workload to meet deadlines and responsibilities set by others. Skillful in preparing simple journal entries and reconciliations - needs some supervision with entries and timelines:Assists in maintaining gl for area of assigned responsibility.  Prepares simple journal entries under direction and/or with template from prior month or other staff.  Maintains existing spreadsheet and makes minor changes as necessary.  Performs some self-review to minimize errors.Is able to communicate potential problems effectively with supervisor; can independently gather information within accounting and budgeting:  Researches simple issues and communicates findings to supervisor.  Formulates pertinent questions related to area of responsibility.  Uses supervisor as main source of information. Fulfills obligations on special projects or tasks assigned:  Completes special projects by deadline.  Completes special projects accurately following directions given.  Asks for help as needed in order to complete project or task timely and accurately.  Requests additional projects or tasks from supervisor in order to increase experience and knowledge. Volunteers to assist others.
