Purpose of Position:
Under the direction of Sheriff this position manages the County’s public safety program by performing complex and responsible administrative and supervisory Law Enforcement work in the Burnett County Sheriff's Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Chief Deputy will manage and coordinate all aspect of the law enforcement program demonstrating the ability to apply good judgment and discretion in independent decision making. The Chief Deputy will report to the Public Safety Committee in the absence of the Sheriff and/or when requested by the Sheriff or Public Safety Committee Chair.

Manages and coordinates all law enforcement programs
Recommends employee hires, promotions, discipline, and discharges
Supervises department staff, manages employee performance and development
Schedules and attends department meetings and briefings
Supervises maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
Prepares work schedules and assigns duties
Oversees the transport of prisoners to institutions and prisons
Directs department budget administration, monitors the budget expense and revenues throughout the year, recommends line-item transfers, and ensuring good fiscal management
Participates in long range planning, forecasts capital equipment needs
Interprets laws, ordinances, rules and regulations for subordinate officers;
Investigates citizen complaints as necessary
Acts as the liaison duties between the Sheriff's Department, the Court, District Attorney's Office and other public and private agencies;
Prepares reports
Develops and implements appropriate policies
Works closely with Human Resources to interpret union contract and personnel policies, in addition to dealing with grievances, bargaining, and arbitrations
Makes public contact to ascertain effectiveness of Law Enforcement programs and individual officers;
Ensures Law Enforcement Officers are scheduled for and receive required and appropriate training
Attends in-service training schools, special instruction classes, seminars and conferences to keep advised on new techniques, procedures or changes in the field of police science;
Maintains a positive public persona
Evaluates and ensures the department policies and programs are appropriate and compliant with the WI. Statutes
Performs other related duties as required
Education, Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Preferably a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Policy, Business Administration, or a related field, with a minimum of five years Law Enforcement experience, two of which shall have been in a supervisory and administrative capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. The individual must be a certified as a Law Enforcement Officer by the State of Wisconsin. Valid WI. Drivers license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of Law Enforcement methods and administration
Ability to interpret and apply laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and county policies
Ability to supervise staff
Ability to prepare and present a variety of reports to different groups of people
Ability to conduct and review investigations
Ensure reports are court ready
Oversee cases for thoroughness and appropriate documentation
Knowledge and understanding of county budgeting
Intermediate knowledge of computers and various software programs used in data management, analysis, and report generation used in support of law enforcement operations
Trained in use and safety of firearms
