Database Developer

Primary Purpose

Works with documented business requirements in a project management-based environment to support Oracle database development and database maintenance for new and existing applications by proactively monitoring, administering, and tuning production, QA, and development Oracle database environments. Advises IS and business users about data access methods, data relationships, and best practices; performs data access and reporting per documented business requirements.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities

· Support database development as necessitated by new application development and legacy application support.

· Provide application development support through database cloning and clone maintenance.

· Analyze database design requirements and provide database development services to create business relevant solutions.

· Completes tasks assigned from project manager and/or database administrator according to collaborated timelines.

· Works with project manager and DBA to define, estimate, and complete tasks.

· Provide timely status reporting in regard to assigned tasks and complete time tracking requirements in order to ensure appropriate resource allocation.

· Formulates and executes strategies that mitigate delays and/or project obstacles.

· Preserves and enhances the integrity and performance of Society Insurance's Oracle databases by using, acquiring, and creating tools to monitor the performance and status of production, development, and QA databases.

· Forecast near term and long term impact of application development on database performance and capacity.

· Actively participate in JAD sessions and code reviews to assist developers with database design and support the database development by documenting, coding, testing, and promoting database objects.

· Maintain and refine database development standards through participation in JAD sessions and code reviews.

· Write simple to complex PL/SQL objects in support of application development and database administration.

· Provide ad-hoc query support for various business units according to documented business requirements.

· Stays current with Oracle database technology and development methods and tools.

· Troubleshoots and solves business process, software, database, and operating system challenges.

Required:

· Bachelor’s Degree with focus in a computer related field OR a 2 year technical degree in a computer related field along with a minimum of 2 years of application development with a focus on multi-dimensional databases.

· Fundamental knowledge of logical, conceptual, and physical database and database design principles.

· Demonstrated experience programming with SQL.

· Demonstrated experience programming database stored procedures.

· Prior experience working with Unix/Linux.

Preferred:

· Demonstrated experience with Oracle database design and development.

· Demonstrated experience with data warehousing, business intelligence and ETL data structures and processes.

· Ability to work in a project based environment both individually and as part of a team.

· Knowledge of the P&C insurance industry and related business processes.

· Experience programming database stored procedures using Oracle’s PL/SQL.

· Experience working with Oracle’s RMAN.

· Working knowledge of AIX.
